Wooden shipping crates are often made from various materials. While manufacturers commonly use softwoods like pine and spruce, plywood and even OSB (oriented strand board) are also popular choices.
The primary distinction between hardwood and softwood lies in their sources: hardwood is typically derived from deciduous trees, which shed their leaves in winter, while softwood is obtained from evergreen trees like conifers. Often more affordable, softwood is popular for export packaging, including pallets and pallet boxes.
ISPM15 is the regulation relating to heat treatment for timber (including pallets, crates, and other packaging). It stands for International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures. These regulations aim to prevent the spread of pests such as insects, diseases and contaminants within any wooden products shipped internationally.
The timber crates supplied by the manufacturing division of Macfarlane Packaging are commonly used for industrial applications.
