As the UK's largest distributor of protective packaging materials, we can assist you in finding the best polythene packaging solution for your products.

A heat sealer is a device that uses heat to fuse the edges of polythene or plastic bags together, creating a secure seal. It works by applying heat and pressure to the material for a specific time, melting the layers together.

There are several types of heat sealing machine, including impulse sealers, direct heat sealers, continuous band sealers and automatic sealers. The choice depends on the material thickness, sealing speed and specific application.

Consider factors like the type and thickness of the polythene, the volume of packaging, required seal width and whether you need manual, semi-automatic or fully automatic operation. For thicker materials, a direct heat sealer might be necessary, while thinner materials can use impulse sealers.

Impulse sealers apply heat only when the sealing arm is pressed down, making them energy-efficient and ideal for materials up to 6 mil thick. Direct heat sealers maintain constant heat and are better suited for thicker materials and sealing thermally sensitive plastics.

Regularly check the sealing element and replace it if it shows signs of wear. Keep the sealing surface clean and free of any residue to ensure a consistent seal. For direct heat sealers, avoid touching the heating elements when hot.

While many heat sealers can handle various types of polythene, it's essential to adjust the temperature and sealing time for different materials. Always test the seal on a sample before proceeding with full-scale packaging.

Common issues include weak seals, burnt seals and the sealer not heating up. Ensure the correct temperature and sealing time are set, check the sealing element for damage and ensure the polythene is clean and properly positioned.

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions. Wear heat-resistant gloves if necessary, keep hands and other body parts away from the heating elements and ensure the work area is well-ventilated to avoid inhaling any fumes from the heated plastic.

A properly sealed polythene package can last indefinitely under normal conditions, as long as the seal remains intact and the packaging is not exposed to extreme temperatures or physical damage. Regular inspections can help ensure the longevity of the sealed package.

Dispensers for polythene packaging hold and dispense rolls of polythene film or bags, making it easier to manage and cut the material to the desired length. They can be manual or automated, depending on the packaging process.
