Gummed paper tape dispensers work by moistening a starch-based adhesive on the back of a paper tape, activating it to bond with cardboard.

Electronic gummed paper tape dispensers are mains powered and feature a water well, which holds temperature-controlled water. When the machine is activated using the control panel, the tape is moistened by the machine before being dispensed and cut to a specified length.
