The main difference between a manual tape dispenser and an automatic tape dispenser is how they function. A manual tape dispenser will require human intervention. In contrast, when you use a semi or fully automatic tape dispenser, some or all of the taping processes will be machine operated.

For example, electronic gummed paper tape dispensers will dispense a set length of pre-moistened tape at the touch a button. Alternatively, a case sealer will automatically tape or glue a boxed closed for you in a production line.

Most tape dispensers are designed to work with standard packing tape sizes. However, it's important to check the dispenser's specifications to ensure compatibility with core size of the tape you’re using, as well as the type of tape you’ve chosen.

A gummed paper tape dispenser, or water-activated tape dispenser, is used to efficiently apply water-activated tape for sealing cartons.

Here's how it works:

• Load the Tape Roll: Place the gummed paper tape onto the dispenser's spindle.
• Thread the Tape: Feed the tape through the guide with the adhesive side facing down.
• Fill the Water Reservoir: Add clean water to the reservoir to moisten the tape.
• Adjust the Tape Length (Optional): Set the desired length for precise dispensing.
• Activate and Seal: Either manually moisten the tape by pulling it through the water well or use controls on an automatic dispenser to dispense the right length of pre-moistened tape.
• Cut the Tape: Use the built-in cutter to trim the tape after sealing.

Using a packing tape gun simplifies sealing boxes. Here's how:

• Load the Tape: Insert the tape roll onto the spindle, ensuring it turns freely.
• Thread the Tape: Guide the tape through the dispenser, adhesive side down.
• Prep the Tape: Pull out a few inches and fold it to create a starter tab.
• Adjust Tension: Set tape tension to your preference.
• Seal the Box: Press the tape against the box and pull the dispenser along the seam.
• Cut the Tape: Use the built-in cutter to trim the tape neatly.

Repeat for each package. This method ensures efficient, even and secure sealing for shipping or moving.

How you use a tape dispenser depends on whether it’s manual or automatic. For automatic gummed tape dispensers:

• Load the Tape: Insert the roll and thread the tape through the path.
• Power On (If Electric): Ensure the dispenser is connected to a power source.
• Set Tape Length: Adjust tape length if your model allows.
• Activate: Use the button or sensor to dispense and cut the tape automatically.
• Seal the Box: Pull along the seam, allowing the tape to unroll and cut.
